Overview
The world of Verra is a dynamic and ever-changing landscape filled with wonder, adventure, and danger. One of the many mechanics that allow us to achieve this adaptability is Events. Events are one of the primary ways that players will experience content. Events focus on delivering a reactive world that keeps players on their toes while changing up gameplay in a fun and unique way, providing challenges, and shaping the world around them. Players will encounter events throughout their entire time on Verra - from early progression to high-level dungeons and raids. As a disclaimer, Ashes of Creation is still in development, so all design decisions are subject to change during Alphas and Betas.
How Events Work
When an Event occurs, players will be able to accept or decline an Event similar to how they would a quest. Should a player choose to accept, Events can serve as a major spigot of experience points, items, and resources.
There could be a multitude of reasons why an Event could trigger - such as the leveling up of a node, change in climate or season, a specific number of NPCs being killed, and much more. You never truly know when an event could occur, so players will need to pay attention and stay on their feet!
Types of Events
There are a variety of different types of Events that could occur based on random chance and other interdependencies. Below are just a few of the possible Events that players may experience while adventuring on Verra!
Calendar Events
Calendar Events can be seen as holiday-related celebrations or other seasonal content. Imagine these Events as things you may experience annually, based on the cultures within the world. Some of these may derive from the seasons, and how the nodes in those areas are affected by them. These will most often be server-wide and provide unique content for a specific duration of time during the calendar year.
Node Attacks
Some Events may include assaults on a node! For example, enemies may be able to damage buildings as an objective and by doing so might knock them out of commission during a node attack. Players on the defending side might have their own objective to take up arms and work together to prevent this from happening. If the node attack is successful, the buildings may need to be repaired before they can be used again.
Monster Coin Events
During a Monster Coin Event, players will be able to activate Monster Coins, allowing them to become monsters and wreak havoc! These Events can be triggered in a variety of different ways, and in some cases they may even provide cosmetic rewards.
Pop-up Events
Pop-up Events are a quintessential example of how Events will keep players on their toes! These small-scale Events preserve the sense of danger in Verra by creating moments that will test players’ combat readiness. Zones of influence that have more active players might experience more Pop-up Events.
POI Events
Points of Interest (POI) Events tell the story of areas in the world as they level up with node progression. Often, failed POI Events can be precursors for node attacks, threatening nearby civilizations.
Narrative Events
Narrative Events help shape the story of Verra based on the choices that players make during key questlines. While narrative story arcs take time to develop across a server, Narrative Events will show players that their choices play a bigger part in shaping the world around them through individual actions
PvP Objectives
The Event system will also create a variety of PvP situations in the open world. From small skirmishes that lead into sieges to battles over capture points during a node or castle siege, PvP objectives will play a crucial role in determining the tide of battle.
Consequences
Actions have consequences - this is especially true in Verra. Events are often one of the ways that players will experience consequences on an immediate and tangible level. Drastic transformations such as changing weather, or perhaps the creation of new objectives will encourage players to explore and adapt.
Conclusion
Unprepared adventurers should be wary, as Events can occur at any time of day, in any zone, and at any moment! Some may be contained to a small zone while others could incorporate the entire server.
