Accord of Autumn

October 11, 2022

As shadows grow long, and days short, a lethargy creeps across the land, settling into Verran hearts, slowing steps, and frustrating passions. The farmers of Verra reap the final vestiges of the harvest, leaving their fields fallow and their larders full, in preparation for wintertide. As the inexorable darkness of the unending season cloaks the land, the anonymous members of the ancient cult, the Accord of Autumn, prepare for the mysterious sabbat known only as the Moonless Revel.

Thought by many to be a cautionary folk tale spun by parents to keep their children from straying too far from home, the Accord of Autumn is a very real religious cult worshiping Feldegeist, a lesser demon of The Void. Young and rudderless victims are lured to the Moonless Revel by the promise of a lighthearted gathering, filled with revelry and debauchery, culminating in a raucous feast served beneath the new moon at the very peak of the harvest. In truth, the purpose of the revel is to gather hapless souls, and prepare them as unwitting followers of the cult’s blasphemous ideology.

The Accord of Autumn cosmetic add-ons will be available in the Ashes of Creation shop from October 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific until November 9, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific. Don’t forget that Order of the Giantslayers addons will be removed on October 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific when the new cosmetics swap over.

Wicker Mask

On the afternoon before the Moonless Revel, adherents to the cult weave wicker masks from corn, wheat, or wicker reeds. They don the masks at sundown, and begin the dance of worship. The dance whips them into a state of ecstasy and causes them to shed Essence, which feeds the Void-born demons walking amongst them, their true visages hidden behind their own masks.

The wicker masks are expressionless reductions with the features of indistinct prey animals, and differ in size alone. Even across Verra, the design of these masks varies little, alluding to the idea that the making of these masks may be divinely inspired. Most scoff at this, as many have woven similar masks with friends at local harvest festivals unaffiliated with the cult. Such festivals were common on Sanctus because the Verran expatriates carried their “folk tales” with them to the mundane world, but of course, no demons were involved. During the harvest season, it is difficult to identify who is an Accord of Autumn cultist or neophyte, and who is simply a party-goer, prankster, or innocuous youth because of the prevalence of wicker masks donned at less malevolent festivals.

Umbral Fetch

et Cosmetic Skin *

Hardly more than a swatch of Void-stuff animated by a bit of precious Essence, the Umbral Fetch is arguably nothing more than a struggling shade aspiring to life on the Material Plane. When an Umbral Fetch is seen, it usually attempts to take the shape of a common animal like a cat, a rabbit, or an oversized spider, but the fetch can only hold a cohesive shape for a short period of time before falling back into a formless cloud.

Since the Material Plane and the Void have no common borders, an Umbral Fetch can only travel to the mortal realm by “hitching a ride” on an entity being pulled there by a summoning ritual or dark magic spell. They can also be pulled across the veil in the magical eddies trailing in the wake of a Harbinger, or in the crossing of an archdemon, demon, or Greater Shedim. They linger on the Material Plane for as long as possible by consuming scraps of fervor and strong emotion.

Some Shedim keep these little aberrations as pets, as do aspirant Void and Shadow Mages. A few have been trained to do simple tasks, but the ephemeral spirits are more often taken on for their aesthetic.

Waxwool Ewe

Scores of Waxwool Ewe were a common sight in the Riverlands before the Harbinger Apocalypse. In the present day, only a few herds remain. These were brought through the Divine Gates by their owners upon their return from Sanctus.

Of the Waxwool variety, the ewes are stronger and less temperamental, and thus, the best choice for riding or hauling. The animal’s nourishing milk, docile demeanor, and quality wool made them invaluable to the settlers on Sanctus, so their eventual reintroduction to Verra seemed inevitable.

These oversize, good-natured dray beasts are nearly impervious to rapid changes in climate, and their many overlapping layers of thick, oily wool will protect them from the heaviest precipitation. Males and females both sport wide, curled horns coiled at the side of the head. They trudge tirelessly on their split-hooves which are hard and steely enough to spark when they strike the cobbles of the road.

Waxwool shepherds often braid, ornament, and bead the ropy black wool of this rare breed to keep it out of their red, watery eyes, and ink-black faces. Without such treatment, one wonders how a Waxwool Ewe can see at all.

Autumn Caller

Though these were once fine clothes, suited to the market or the theater, they've been worn through and patched numerous times over trackless weeks on the road. No matter where their journey began, traveling members of the Accord of Autumn seem to inevitably end up wearing a motley collection of patched and belted scraps. This contributes in large part to the innocuous and deceptively carefree demeanor of the traveling demon worshippers of the cult.

Calling Cart

The so-called Calling Carts of the Accord of Autumn are purpose-built for the task of roving the countryside, gathering members. They sport a smooth ride on oversized iron leaf springs, and their spindly steel wheels easily withstand the miles of jostling road, and the jerky and uneven gait of the snuffling Waxwool Ewes that pull them. The cart’s billowing covers are as patched and colorful as the raiment of those who ride in them, and they are often bedecked with flags, chimes, bells, and other noisemakers to herald their arrival. Country dwellers have come to associate the sound of these jangling bells with the cult’s arrival on their annual sojourn across Verra.

Hearth upon the Heath

Freehold Small House Building Cosmetic Skin *

When inclement weather demands it, a yurt is the ideal shelter for a band traveling through grasslands. The round footprint affords ample space for travelers to spread out and share the warmth of a central fire. Ease of setup and break-down allows travelers to pick up and leave as readily as they settled in on the previous night.

Road-wise caravaneers have come to recognize the small clusters of yurts favored by the Accord of Autumn. These temporary shelters are festooned with small flags, bells, and windchimes. Unless the caravaneers seek a free meal – and the gentle sermon sure to be included with it – they give the cult a wide berth.
