Opulent Negotiations

June 07, 2022

It is said, “Negotiation is the art of letting the other side have your way.” Some see diplomacy as a test of wills, some as an art form, and some as the inevitable progression of survival instinct. To the illustrious merchants of the Vaelune it is a way of life. Securing a binding deal requires more finesse than felling a beast for its hoarded treasure, or seizing an indestructible fortress. After all, the spoils of war are quickly spent, and there are always additional adversaries seeking fortune and fame, eager to replace the slain.

The Opulent Negotiations cosmetic add-ons will be available in the Ashes of Creation shop from June 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific until July 13, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific. Don’t forget that Windswept Wonders addons will be removed on June 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Pacific when the new cosmetics swap over.

Concordat Case

To a Vaelune Negotiator, a signed contract is sacrosanct – an inviolate covenant forged in fidelity and a legitimate appraisal of their business acumen. In accordance with a tradition their people have adhered to for centuries, once signed and witnessed, the contract is placed in a locked Concordat Case with its chain securely latched across the Negotiator’s body. This is for safekeeping, until such time as they can triumphantly deliver it to their employer.

Scythen Scorpion

The perilous and forbidding Sandsquall Desert is home to many common creatures that have evolved into living nightmares, acclimating to the extreme conditions of their hostile ecosystem. The most pernicious of these is the Scythen Scorpion. These oversized predatory arachnids are swift, intelligent, and fearless, often prevailing against prey many times their size. Notable features include razor sharp bone scythes, ripping mandibles, and twin stingers that deliver a debilitating neurotoxin. These deadly creatures are often kept as pets, and have become status symbols by wealthy thrill seekers, churlish bullies, and tyrannical crimelords.

Dynasty Beetle

Scholars have long debated the origin of the Dynasty Beetle. The defining characteristic of this species of giant insect is its elytra – the hardened wing-cases common to most beetles – which is naturally embellished with stunning topaz gemstones and gold filigree. For years, these preternatural features were thought to be the result of an ancient mage enchantment. Recently, a respected naturalist proposed the theory that Dynasty Beetles subsist on minerals and metals native to the dunes and rocky canyons of the desert. These curious and easily-domesticated creatures have become a very popular mount for Vaelune merchants with far too much money to spend.

Guise of the Negotiator

It is said that only fools and spendthrifts bargain on their own behalf. The expertise to draft a superior and binding legal contract is so highly sought after by Vaelune merchants that a truly skilled Negotiator makes quite a lucrative living. A modern tradition originating on Sanctus dictates that when a Vaelune Negotiator is acting as a direct proxy of their employer, they must wear a garb that obscures their head, face, and body. In the eyes of the law, this means that the negotiation effectively took place in the physical presence of the employer. Some agents dislike this practice, because it prevents them from interpreting the facial expressions and tells of the other Negotiator. Others approve of the change, because it has the added effect of concealing the avaricious grin on their face when they accept their exorbitant closing fees.

Diplomat’s Conveyance

It is of no surprise that diplomats and negotiators prefer to travel in opulent comfort. They claim it keeps their minds free from the anxieties of travel, and helps them focus and prepare for the negotiations to come. Exquisitely outfitted and manufactured with the finest materials and craftsmanship that money can buy, this conveyance allows them to navigate the mighty Hydris River in style, keeping them rested and refreshed for the business ahead.

A wise agent knows that the location of a negotiation is just as important as the parties involved. The correct choice of venue ensures that the other party will remain unaware and unconcerned, whilst they are plied with drink and distraction. “It is far easier,” the saying goes, “for a mammoth to pass through the eye of a needle, if it is slightly greased.” With the right atmosphere and the proper amount of “lubrication,” they will be enthralled by indulgence and see only silken agreements and gilded clauses!
